International students wishing to study in Canada generally require a study permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Study Permit Basics
To qualify, an applicant must have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition and living expenses, and satisfy admissibility requirements, including in some cases a medical examination.
Working While Studying
Eligible study permit holders may work on campus without a separate work permit and, depending on program and enrollment status, may work off campus for a limited number of hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
Graduates of eligible programs at a DLI may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, allowing them to gain Canadian work experience after completing their studies — experience that can subsequently support an application under the Canadian Experience Class.
A Pathway to Permanent Residence
For many international students, a Canadian study permit is the first step in a longer-term strategy toward Canadian work authorization and, ultimately, permanent residence. See our Immigrate to Canada page for more on those pathways.
