Naturalization is the process by which a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) becomes a U.S. citizen. Caruso Law assists clients in evaluating eligibility and preparing a complete, accurate naturalization application.
General Eligibility Requirements
- Held lawful permanent resident status for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen spouse)
- Maintained continuous residence in the U.S. during the required period
- Met the physical presence requirement (generally at least half of the required period)
- Resided for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where the application is filed
- Demonstrated good moral character
- Passed the English and civics examinations, subject to age- and residency-based exemptions
- Demonstrated attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
The N-400 Process
Naturalization begins with filing Form N-400, Application for Naturalization, followed by biometrics, an interview with a USCIS officer, the English and civics tests (unless exempt), and, upon approval, an Oath of Allegiance ceremony at which citizenship is formally granted.
Special Categories
Certain applicants — including spouses of U.S. citizens residing abroad, members of the U.S. armed forces, and children of U.S. citizens — may qualify for expedited or alternative naturalization provisions.
