Foreign nationals seeking to pursue academic or vocational studies in the United States generally require one of the nonimmigrant student or exchange visitor categories described below.
F-1 Academic Student
The F-1 visa is the primary category for full-time academic study at a SEVP-certified college, university, seminary, or language training program. Admission requires a Form I-20 issued by the school and evidence of sufficient funds to cover the course of study.
M-1 Vocational Student
The M-1 classification applies to students enrolled in vocational or non-academic programs, such as technical or trade schools.
J-1 Exchange Visitor
The J-1 visa supports a wide range of approved exchange programs, including university study, research scholar positions, and certain training programs. Some J-1 categories carry a two-year home-residency requirement that should be evaluated before enrolling.
Work Authorization While Studying
F-1 students may be eligible for limited on-campus employment, as well as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) — including the STEM OPT extension for qualifying degree fields — which can provide valuable work authorization during and after a program of study.
Transitioning After Graduation
Many students transition from F-1 status into an employment-based category such as H-1B or, where applicable, TN or L-1 status. Planning this transition early — well before OPT authorization expires — is critical to maintaining lawful status.
